How photocells work
On the surface of an N-shaped silicon wafer, some P-type impurities are doped by diffusion to form a PN junction, which is a silicon photovoltaic cell. When irradiated on PN, for example, when the photon energy hv is greater than the forbidden band width E of silicon, the electrons in the valence band transition to the conduction band, generating electron-hole pairs. Because the electric field direction of the PN junction barrier layer points to the P region, under the action of the electric field of any barrier layer, the photo-excited electrons move to the outside of the N region, and the photo-excited holes move to the outside of the P region. The two surfaces of the PN junction are parallel to form a potential difference, the P region is positively charged, which is the positive electrode of the photovoltaic cell, and the N region is negatively charged, which is the negative electrode of the photovoltaic cell. As the light intensity on the PN junction increases, more holes flow to the P region and more electrons flow to the N region, so that the potential difference between the two sides of the silicon photovoltaic cell increases. As mentioned above, under the action of light, the phenomenon of generating an electromotive force of a certain direction and a certain magnitude is called the photovoltaic effect.
