The working principle of the battery and the charging and discharging method
The battery is composed of a positive plate (lead dioxide PbO2) and a negative plate (sponge-like pure lead Pb) immersed in an electrolyte, which is an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid (H2S04).
When the battery and the load are connected and discharged, the PbO2 on the positive plate and the Pb on the negative plate both become PbS04, the H2S04 in the electrolyte decreases, and the relative density decreases.
Change in the opposite direction during charging, the PbS04 on the positive and negative plates is restored to the original Pb02 and Pb respectively, the sulfuric acid in the electrolyte increases, and the relative density increases. If the intermediate chemical reaction process is omitted, it can be expressed by the following formula:
Pb02+Pb+2H2S04=2PbS04+2H20 (1—1)
1. The establishment of electric potential
When the electrode plate is immersed in the electrolyte, the metal lead is affected by two aspects at the negative plate. On the one hand, it has a tendency to dissolve in the electrolyte, so a small amount of lead enters the solution to generate Pb2+, leaving two on the electrode plate. Electron 2e makes the plate negatively charged; on the other hand, due to the attraction of positive and negative charges, Pb2+ tends to deposit on the surface of the plate. When the two reach equilibrium, the dissolution stops, and the plate has a negative potential, about -0.1V.
At the positive plate, a small amount of Pb02 dissolves into the electrolyte, and forms Pb(OH): with water, which is then separated into tetravalent lead ions and hydroxide ions.
