A fuel cell is a device that uses a specific fuel to generate current through a proton exchange membrane (PEMProtonExchangeMembrane) and a catalytic layer (CLCatalystLayer). can provide continuous power. Its working principle is to use a technology called proton exchange membrane, so that hydrogen is catalytically decomposed into protons at the anode under the action of a proton exchange membrane covered with a catalyst, and these protons pass through the proton exchange membrane to the cathode. Electrons are released during the decomposition process, and the electrons are drawn through the load to the cathode, thus producing electricity.
At the anode, through the action of a proton exchange membrane and a catalyst, at the cathode, protons combine with oxygen and electrons to produce water. That is to say, the hydrogen inside the fuel cell chemically reacts with the oxygen in the air to generate water, and at the same time generates an electric current, which can also be understood as the reverse reaction of electrolysis of water.
In addition to supplying hydrogen at the anode, the fuel cell also collects hydrogen protons (H+) and releases electrons; at the cathode, the electrons are captured by the load to generate electricity. The function of the proton exchange membrane is just to allow the proton H+ to pass through and combine with the oxygen in the cathode to produce water. This water is released in the air in the form of water vapor under the action of the temperature during the reaction process (a water recovery device is required for high-power fuel cells used in automobiles). Note that pure water produced by using hydrogen as a fuel cell is drinkable, while the aqueous solution produced by using methanol as a fuel may produce toxic substances such as formaldehyde that are not drinkable.
