The concept of micro inverter has a long history. SMA considered developing the product 10 years ago, but finally decided not to do it. Since then, other companies have been improving hardware and software to make micro inverters more attractive. Enphase, a California based company founded by three NASA engineers, began commercial mass production in 2008 and sold tens of thousands of products that year. Enphase was listed on NASDAQ this year after several venture capital investments, becoming the world's first micro Inverter Manufacturer.
