Electrostatics studies the characteristics and laws of "static charge". Electric charge is the intrinsic property of certain subatomic particles (charged particles), which can be divided into positive and negative charges. The charge quantity is the amount of electric charge in coulombs. Positive charges have an amount of charge greater than zero, and negative charges have an amount of charge less than zero. By convention, electrons have a negative charge with a charge of about −1.6022×10−19 coulombs; protons have a positive charge with a charge of +1.6022×10−19 coulombs. Corresponding to each charged particle, its antiparticle has the same amount of heteroelectric charge. The law of conservation of electric charge states that the quantity of electric charge is a conserved quantity; in an isolated system, no matter what changes, the total quantity of electric charge will remain the same.
The repulsive or attractive force felt by these light balls is electrostatic. Electrostatic force comes from electric charge: two charged objects will exert an electrostatic force on each other. Electrostatic forces only act on charged objects. Coulomb's law provides a quantitative description of electrostatic force: the electrostatic force is proportional to the amount of charge of two charged objects, and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the two charged objects. Charge can be measured in many ways. In the early days, scientists used gold foil electroscopes to measure electric charge. Now, in class demonstrations, this method is often used. However, most real-world operating conditions use an electrometer to measure charge.
