German physicist Heinrich Hertz discovered in 1887 that shining ultraviolet light on electrodes could help produce more sparks. This is the phenomenon produced by the photoelectric effect. Physicists including Joseph Thomson and Philip Leonard have done a lot of theoretical and experimental research on the photoelectric effect. In 1905, Albert Einstein published a paper explaining the numerous experimental data on the photoelectric effect. Einstein argued that light beams consisted of a group of discrete quanta (now called photons), rather than continuous fluctuations. If the frequency of the photon is greater than a certain limit frequency, the photon has enough energy to make the electrons on the metal surface escape, resulting in the photoelectric effect. This important discovery opens the door to quantum physics.

Jack Kilby independently invented the integrated circuit in 1958 and Robert Noyce in 1959. Today, a large number of electronic components such as transistors, diodes, resistors, capacitors, etc. can be assembled in a single integrated circuit.
