A simple current mirror is a three-terminal device, and the diagram below shows its schematic. N1 in the figure is the input node, which is the input terminal that can accept a polarity current I1; N2 is the output node, which is the output terminal that can provide the output current I2, and I2 is the copy (copy) of I1, that is, I2 and I2 I1 flows in the same direction and has the same value. It can also be said that I2 follows I1; N0 is the common node, and the current in this node is the sum of I1 and I2.
A practical current mirror should have the following three basic properties.
① The current I 2 of the output branch should be basically independent of the voltage V 2 of the node N 2, and V 2 is allowed to be biased to any potential that is different from the common node N 0 from several hundred millivolts to several volts, that is, the increase of the node N 2. Quantitative output resistance or AC small signal output resistance r 0 (more commonly it should be AC output impedance Z o) should be very high, ideally infinite.
② The DC voltage V1 of the input node N1 should be very small, usually several hundred millivolts different from the common node N0, and the voltage V1 is basically independent of the incremental change of the input current I1, that is, the small-signal AC input resistance ri (more commonly known as AC input impedance Z i) should be fairly low, ideally zero.
③ The current transfer ratio M=I 2/I 1 should be as close to 1 as possible, and has nothing to do with the amplitude of the current in the range of many tenfold changes, that is, the ideal current mirror is a linear element. In the application of the signal transmission path, the amplitude-frequency response and phase-frequency response of the ideal current mirror current transfer ratio M should be independent of the frequency of the signal.
