How do I size the pump, inverter and solar panels for PV irrigation system?

First of all you want is the pump size. And after that find a suitable Solar Water Pump inverter.
1HP = 0.745kW
So, As per the requirement calculate the size of the Solar Inverter keeping in mind the size of solar pump. Keep the Solar Inverter on the upper size band.

A great amount of inverters are available in market. ABB, Schneider, Tmeic are a little expensive. Chinese make of inverters are quite cheap and equally efficient if you are willing to go with that.
For DC input Voltage range of the inverter see the DATASHEET of the inverter. Check the Vmpp of your Solar Module and decide upon the number of panels.
Lets assume that you got 300W Solar Module. A typical 300W Solar Panel has Vmpp of 37V. So for a system of 5kw (assumed value) you need to install around 5000w / 300w = 17 modules of PV power.
A typical inverter has an Input Voltage range of around 500 - 700 Vdc. So, make these modules into a string and install modules in series. If you have a larger size consider the same method but if the no. of modules are coming larger in number make them into strings of 18 modules each.
 Do not forget to put safety equipments such as fuse ,Earthing protection, switch etc.
