Why is it recommended to select the generator capacity at 2 to 3 times the inverter capacity?

When selecting the generator capacity, it is usually recommended that its rated power be 2 to 3 times the inverter capacity. This recommendation is based on the following reasons:

1. Starting current requirements: Many loads (e.g. air conditioners, refrigerators, motors, etc.) generate a high current for a short time when starting, which can be 3-5 times the rated power. If the generator capacity is too small, the voltage will drop or the equipment will not start normally because the starting current demand cannot be met. Selecting a large capacity generator can ensure stable system operation and avoid frequent equipment downtime or damage.

2. Inverter charging requirements: When the inverter is used with a battery, it may be necessary to draw power from the generator to charge the battery. The charger requires additional power, especially with large capacity batteries or in fast charging mode. A large capacity generator can meet both charging and load requirements, reducing the impact of load variations on the system.

3. Reactive power compensation: The actual output power of the generator is reduced by the load power factor (usually <1). For example, if an inductive load is connected to the inverter, the power factor may be as low as 0.8. In this case the rated power of the generator must be higher to compensate for the loss of actual available power.

4. Reduce the risk of overloading the generator: Prolonged full load operation can lead to overheating of the generator, reduced efficiency and even overload damage. Capacity margin can improve operational stability and equipment life.

Recommendation: For example, if the inverter capacity is 5kW, the generator capacity should be selected as 10-15kW. This will not only ensure normal operation of the equipment, but also provide redundancy for future expansion. Selecting high quality generators is also an important factor in ensuring stable operation of the system.
