HSI-122  Low Frequency Pure Sine Wave Inverter with PWM Solar Controller and AC Charger

In electrical systems, loads can be divided into three types according to their electrical characteristics: resistive loads, capacitive loads and inductive loads. Here we will concentrate on resistive and capacitive loads.

1. Resistive loads
Resistive loads are loads where there is no phase difference between current and voltage. The resistive characteristics of this load allow electrical energy to be converted directly into heat, light, etc. For example

Electric heater: When current passes through a resistor, heat is generated.

Light bulb: When current passes through a filament, light and heat are emitted.

In resistive loads, the current and voltage waveforms are completely synchronised, i.e. the phase difference between current and voltage is zero, so the power factor is 1. The typical characteristic of resistive loads is that electrical energy is consumed and converted into heat or light energy, and there is almost no other form of energy conversion.

2. Capacitive loads
Capacitive loads are loads that contain capacitors and where there is a phase difference between current and voltage. With capacitive loads, the change in current precedes the change in voltage, usually manifested as the peak of the current arriving first. For example

Capacitive motors: commonly used in fans and air conditioners.
Capacitor banks: used to smooth current waveforms in some electronic equipment.
With capacitive loads, the current leads the voltage, so the power factor is usually less than 1. The current and voltage waveforms of the load will change due to the storage and release of electrical energy in the capacitor. Although the capacitive load itself does not directly consume electrical energy, it will affect the power factor of the power system, resulting in the generation of reactive power.

 

Impact and application:
Resistive loads are common in household appliances and heating equipment, which can efficiently convert electrical energy into heat or light energy; capacitive loads are usually found in power systems or industrial equipment that require capacitor regulation. When designing capacitive loads, special consideration should be given to the power factor to avoid unnecessary loads on the power system.
